Discover the Dodecanese: A 7-Day Sailing Itinerary from Rhodes

The island of Rhodes and its coast is beautiful to explore by boat, but the Dodecanese islands and islets are not less beautiful – sometimes even more so. If you want to see what life on these Greek islands is really like away from the masses, we would definitely recommend you exploring them. Other Dodecanese islands are uninhabited and show you the most stunning landscapes without any human influence.

Day 1 – Rhodes: Spend the day exploring some of the most stunning beaches the island has to offer.

Day 2 – Sail from Rhodes to Symi: Before sailing to your first destination, make sure to plan some time to explore the most important historical sites on the island of Rhodes. In Symi you will drive to a beautiful port with colorful houses greeting you upon arrival. Saint George bay is an impressive sight with majestic cliffs overlooking the Aegean sea.

Day 3 – Sail from Symi to Mandraki (Nisyros island)Mandraki is a very popular tourist destination and for good reason. There are plenty of interesting museums, like the Archaeological Museum of Nisyros and the Coin museum of Panagia Spiliani church. The Windmill Mandraki is a very beautiful sight next to the sea.

Day 4 – Sail from Mandraki to KosKos is another stunning Dodecanese island with many ancient sites just waiting to be discovered. The Plane Tree of Hippocrates, the Roman Odeon of Kos and the Asklepieion Kos are amongst the most interesting historical sites. The Casa Romana is a magnificent old Roman villa that has been restored and is showing some of the most beautiful remnants of ancient Roman art. Visit Lambi Beach or Agios Stefanos Beach for a quick dip in the sea, surrounded by turquoise waters and stunning landscapes.

Day 5 – Sail from Kos to Livadia (Tilos island): Sunbathe at the stunning Livadia beach with its 1km long pebble stone beach and crystal clear water. Only 300 people live in this picturesque seaside town, making it a great place to witness authentic life on a Greek island that hasn’t yet been overrun by touristy crowds.

Day 6 – Sail from Livadia to Chalki (Halki island): The picturesque seaside town is going to greet you with its historic buildings and stunning mountains in the background. Ftenagia Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island and the perfect spot to relax for a couple of hours. Areta Beach is a magnificent beach surrounded by impressive cliffs and rock formations that are surely going to remain ingrained in your memory.

Day 7 – Sail from Chalki to Rhodes: Every good sailing vacation has to come to an end, so it doesn’t come as a big surprise that your time has come to sail back to Rhodes, where your sailing adventure around the Dodecanese islands started. Before you head back to the island, make sure to stop by the stunning island of Alimia. This uninhabited island is a real gem in this part of the Aegean sea and became famous when a Belgium TV channel shot a TV show here.

Day 1: Rhodes to Lindos (27 nm)

After leaving Rhodes, sail down the east coast of the island towards the charming village of Lindos. Along the way, you’ll pass by some beautiful bays and beaches, such as Kalathos and Haraki, where you can drop anchor for a swim or lunch. Once you arrive in Lindos, you can explore its narrow alleys, visit the ancient acropolis, or relax on the beach.

Day 2: Lindos to Symi (22 nm)

Today, you’ll sail to the island of Symi, known for its colorful neoclassical architecture and picturesque harbor. On the way, you can stop at some secluded coves and bays, like Agia Marina and Nanou Bay, where you can swim in crystal-clear waters. In Symi, you can stroll around the harbor and admire the colorful buildings, visit the Panormitis Monastery, or hike to the top of the mountain for panoramic views.

Day 3: Symi to Nisyros (23 nm)

Nisyros is a volcanic island with a unique landscape and a charming capital, Mandraki. On the way there, you can stop at the island of Tilos and explore its secluded beaches, like Eristos and Plaka. In Nisyros, you can visit the volcano, hike around the crater, or wander around the narrow streets of Mandraki and enjoy the local cuisine.

Day 4: Nisyros to Kos (23 nm)

Kos is a cosmopolitan island with a rich history and culture, known for its ancient sites, beautiful beaches, and lively nightlife. On the way there, you can stop at the island of Gyali and swim in its turquoise waters. In Kos, you can visit the ancient agora, the castle of the Knights, or the plane tree of Hippocrates, where the father of medicine taught his students.

Day 5: Kos to Kalymnos (16 nm)

Kalymnos is a rugged and mountainous island with a rich tradition in sponge diving and rock climbing. On the way there, you can stop at the small island of Pserimos and enjoy its secluded beaches, like Agios Fokas and Vathy. In Kalymnos, you can visit the sponge factories, hike in the mountains, or try rock climbing in some of the best spots in the world.

Day 6: Kalymnos to Symi (33 nm)

Today, you’ll sail back to Symi and enjoy its charming atmosphere once again. On the way there, you can stop at some of the islands you missed on the previous days, like Chalki and Alimia, and explore their hidden gems. In Symi, you can relax in the shade of a palm tree, stroll around the harbor, or have a delicious seafood dinner.

Day 7: Symi to Rhodes (24 nautical miles)

On the last day, we’ll leave Symi and sail back to Rhodes. Along the way, we’ll pass by the beautiful small island of Sesklia, which is a perfect spot for swimming and snorkeling. Once we arrive in Rhodes, we’ll have the opportunity to explore the old town’s cobblestone streets, medieval walls, and bustling markets. Afterward, we’ll spend the night at the marina and enjoy a farewell dinner onboard.
